As book readers, we were really looking forward to the arrival in Trollesund because of the characters we meet there, and we were so happy to see them! Yes, we got Lee Scoresby and Hester, and the incredible Iorek Byrnison! Plus Lyra took control! What a wonderful experience to be had in S01E04 “Armour”, which aired on HBO on November 25, 2019. It was written by Jack Thorne and directed by Otto Bathurst.
We have a bit of news for you this week, starting with Digital Spy uncovering a major Harry Potter connection in Episode 4! Then we have Newsweek spotlighting the actor who voices armored bear Iorek Byrnison. We wind up with Radio Times on the road to find the places where His Dark Materials is filmed!
We open this week high in the northern skies in a balloon, with the singing of aeronaut Lee Scoresby and his daemon Hester! They are heading to Trollesund to find their friend, the armored bear Iorek Byrnison. At the same time, the Gyptians arrive in the port city, seeking help from the witch clans. Farder Coram and Lyra visit the Witch Consul Dr. Lanselius, who advises them to obtain the services of…an armored bear! He also agrees to contact the Witch-Queen Serafina Pekkala on their behalf. Farder Coram reveals to Lyra that he and Serafina had a child together who died young. Kaisa, Serafina Pekkala’s daemon, visits Lyra and Farder Coram and tells them the witch will help them however she can. They find Iorek Byrnison and offer him employment, which he declines. The pair meet Lee Scoresby after he has been tossed out of a bar while inquiring about Iorek. Fearing Lee will take Iorek from them., they refuse to tell him where the bear is. Lee later finds him on his own, and a bereft and despondent Iorek tells him that his armor has been taken from him. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter maneuvers through a tricky situation at the Magisterium by revealing she has captured Lord Asriel and is holding him in the far north, with the help of the panserbjørne. Lord Boreal has an angry encounter with alethiometer reader Fra Pavel and threatens him. Lyra meets with Lee and she realizes that the only thing keeping Iorek in Trollesund is the loss of his sky metal armor. She finds Iorek and offers to reveal where his armor is if he will join the Gyptian quest, which he does. Iorek raids the local Oratory, finds his armor, and puts it on. He is attacked by local forces, who are no match for him, and Lyra and Lee convince him not to kill anyone. Lord Faa agrees to allow the bear and the aeronaut to join the venture north, and the Gyptians set out on foot. In the far north, Mrs. Coulter visits Iofur Raknison, king of the panserbjørne, and makes a deal!
