We love those Gyptians, don’t you? And Mrs. Coulter is even darker than we thought! Plus Lyra can read the alethiometer with no training? Grumman is Parry? Poor Benjamin! There was so much going on in this week’s episode of His Dark Materials! It was all in S01E03 “The Spies”! The show aired on HBO on November 18, 2019, and it was written by Jack Thorne and directed by Dawn Shadforth.
Three nice news items await us, beginning with EW revealing how His Dark Materials turns into a companion to the original books. Next NME chats with ‘The Golden Compass’ star Dakota Blue Richards, and she reveals why it was “strange” watching ‘His Dark Materials’. We close up with Nerdist on how Ma Costa makes His Dark Materials feel real!
Then we pick up right where we left off last week, with Lyra taken and netted in a van. The van is stopped by Gyptians! They free Lyra and take her to their boats. She meets Ma Costa, Fader Coram and Lord Faa, and they offer her a place and to keep her safe. Mrs. Coulter visits Jordan college looking for Lyra, and threatens the Master while tearing up the place. She discovers he had an alethiometer and that Lyra now has it! Meanwhile, the Magisterium gets wind of Lyra’s whereabouts and orders the police to storm the Gyptian fleet to find her. They fail and move on. An upset Lyra runs away, with Ma Costa following. She makes a shocking revelation to Lyra and offers to care for and protect her. In our world, Lord Boreal hunts for the presumably deceased Stanislaus Grumman, and Thomas tells him he believes Grumman is actually a man from his world named John Parry! Parry disappeared years ago but left behind a wife and child. Boreal meets with another man and sends him to investigate Parry’s family. Tony and Benjamin break into Mrs. Coulter’s flat and find a list of all the children that have been taken. They are discovered by the monkey daemon, and in a melee Benjamin dies while Tony escapes. Lord Faa orders a Roping to discuss the missing children, and with Lyra and Fader Coram’s help he convinces the Gyptians to head North to find them. Lyra works with the alethiometer and discovers how to use it. It reveals Benjamin’s death to her! Mrs. Coulter sends two spy-flys to find Lyra, and one returns to her, revealing Lyra’s location! Finally, the Gyptian fleet sets sail for the North!
After our episode breakdown, we dive into more aspects of the ep, especially the incredible chemistry among the lead actors. Then we get some terrific feedback from you guys. After that it’s time for all the book readers as we cross into our Bridge to the Stars segment, which is chock full of spoilers and speculation so spoilerphobes beware!
