Have we had a fave episode yet of “His Dark Materials”? This week we certainly have a contender! We’ve got Lyra and Will working together, the return of Lord Boreal, and a startling encounter between Lee Scoresby and Mrs. Coulter! All this and more await you in S02E03 “Theft” which aired on HBO on November 30, 2020. It was written by Sarah Quintrell and Jack Thorne and directed by Leanne Welham.
This is Episode 21 and contains the news and our episode breakdown and analysis. To hear our feedback and Bridge to the Stars spoilers segments, stay tuned for Episode 22.
Two very insightful news items stand out this week. First we have EW revealing how ‘His Dark Materials’ translated the world of the witches to the screen. Then we enter the Den of Geek to learn the secret of why Mrs. Coulter hurts her daemon! Plus we briefly discuss the I Ching!
Then it’s showtime! Lyra leaves Will in Citàgazze to visit Mary Malone in Oxford, and the girl is interrogated and almost caught by DI Walters. As Lyra flees from Walters, a car pulls up to her – it’s Charles Latrom aka Lord Boreal, who offers her a ride. She reluctantly accepts to escape her pursuer. She gets cold feet and demands to be let out of the car. She’s in such a rush she leaves her rucksack, which contains the Alethiometer. Latrom returns the bag to her, and she finds he stole the device!
Mary tries to communicate with Dark Matter and faces initial failure. She later tries using the I Ching and unwittingly starts the dialogue she wants!
In the North, the witches of Lake Enara view the destruction wrought by the Magisterium, and this redoubles their desire to protect Lyra. Kaisa visits Iorek Byrnisson who reveals that Lyra has left their world to follow Lord Asriel.
A mysterious shaman summons Lee Scoresby, somehow causing his balloon to go to a new northern city. Lee makes inquiries seeking Stanislaus Grumman, and visits an observatory. The scientist there brands Lee a heretic and shoots at him, and Lee returns fire killing him. Lee is captured by Magisterium goons and imprisoned. Mrs. Coulter is forced to land in the same town and hears of Lee’s capture. She interrogates him, seeking Lyra’s whereabouts. He won’t yield even under threat of torture. She leaves, shaken by his insights into her past, and later frees him asking if he finds the girl that he keep her safe.
In Oxford, Lyra tells Will what has happened and that they must retrieve the Alethiometer. Will agrees and they go to Latrom’s estate, where he invites them in. He reveals his true identity as Lord Boreal to them, and demands that they find a certain knife in the world of Cittàgazze. If they bring it to him, in exchange he will release the Alethiometer. They agree to go and obtain the knife!
